Dumbing Down

It's nearly time for my son to take a battery of test designed by the New York Public School System. For months now, they have been studying and drilling. I've written before about the useless nature of these tests so I won't repeat the reasons I hold them in such low regard.

When explaining the tests to my nephew who was visiting from Florida, something quite disturbing dawned on me. For him to understand my views I used an analogy pertaining to robotics, being that he's into that sort of thing. I said that should you teach me the parts of a circuit board, over and over until I could recite them back, I still wouldn't understand what it did. All I would know is what the parts are. Then it hit me.

We are teaching our children to be assembly line workers. We're teaching them to take the test, without understanding the subject matter. It is a very sly way to dumb down the student body, while giving the appearance of education. It's enough to give the conspiracy theorists another look, at any rate.

  1. At last someone who sees the main cause for the U.S.'s slow decline among the world's nations. Our children are not taught to use reason or logic to solve problems. We no longer create, we follow.
